PV Solar Panels – How Do They Work?

Photovoltaic (PV) solar technology uses solar cells to convert sunlight directly into electricity, unlike solar thermal panels that directly heat water or air.

Solar modules consist of semi-conducting material that absorbs photons from sunlight in a way that frees electrons from atoms. Electricity is produced as the electrons flow through the semi-conducting material. A group of solar modules are typically combined in an array to produce electricity in the form of DC current which is then inverted to AC current and fed into your fuse board via a feed in meter.

Solar panels are ideally sited on a south facing roof at 30 – 40 degrees elevation. Even on east and west facing roofs, solar PV panels can produce up to 85% of their output.
